Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the average age for TXIOS Fellows?
A: We suggest that TXIOS is best suited for students ages 14 and older who are currently engaged in or have recently completed the study of an orchestral instrument.
Q: How do I know my orchestra seating?
A: Your seating will be assigned initially based on the audition video you upload as part of the application process. Once the Institute begins, we may make seating position adjustments based on full-orchestra and sectional rehearsals. Every effort will be made to rotate seating, when appropriate and based on ability, both in part assignments, i.e., principal, assistant principal, etc., and within the instrument sections.
Q: Will I get practice parts?
A: Yes, orchestra excerpt music for your instrument will be available at the beginning of the application period. Beginning approximately one month prior to the opening of the Institute, full orchestra parts for each instrument will be posted for online viewing, download or printing by individual Institute participants.
Q: I am in high school, will I automatically be seated in the back of my section?
A: No. Seating assignments are based on ability and experience, not age.
Q: I attend a really prestigious and famous school, so I’ll be seated first chair, right?
A: No. Placement is based on your current ability level and the results of an audition. All candidates must complete our online application and upload a recent video performance of a short prepared solo work and required orchestral excerpt.
Q: Who can attend the Friday evening public performances?
A: The Friday evening public performances are free of charge and open to all. Performances will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m.. Ending times may vary depending on programming and whether chamber ensembles are scheduled to perform. Typically, performances will be 60 to 90 minutes in length.
